Understanding the insect orders, stages, behavior, and seasonality is essential for effective fly selection.

  • 8 Primary Orders of Insects

Allen will teaches the insects you must know—midges—and the others that are good to have in the back of your mind—water boatmans.

  • Four Primary Stages of Insects

Nymph, emerger, dun, spinner: what do these all mean? For this part of the class, we will breakdown the four main stages of aquatic insects.

  • Seasonality of Insects

Be prepared! Learn the hatch charts and times of the year you can expect certain insects to be the trouts main food source

  • Midges

Learn to identify midges / know their seasonality and behaviors / have the top midge patterns for your fly box.

  • Mayflies

Learn to identify mayflies / know their seasonality and behaviors / have the top mayfly patterns to cover their four life stages.

  • How to Find the Bugs

Insects won’t always be flying around as dun or laying on the water as spinners, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t match the hatch. This final portion of the class will cover the best seining techniques to find the “invisible” insects fish will be munching on.
