WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Fly Selection Introduction

Learn the difference between guessing and educated guessing (fly selection.Understand why becoming skilled at fly selection matters: confidence, efficiency, efficacy.

  • The Variables of Fly Selection

The complex and dynamic ecosystem of fly selection—so many variables, how can you know what to do?

    The factors of fly selection:

    1. Fly stage or type
      1. Exact dry imitation vs nymph imitation
    2. Water type
      1. Rivers (fast, slow, deep, etc), tail-waters, spring creeks, lakes
    3. Seasonality
    4. Location
      1. Pressured river vs unblazed waters
    5. And more!
  • Introducing the REACT Method

We developed the REACT Method to provide a systematic approach for fly selection. Master this universal fly selection strategy to begin selecting the right flies faster.

    The REACT method acronym:

    Read

    Examine

    Approach

    Choose

    Try

  • R: READ

Learn the first variable of the REACT Method, R (Read) through our thorough and detailed examples.

  • E: Examine

The second variable of REACT, E (Examine) is a critical step in the REACT process: once again we’ll explain the key difference between R and E through detailed on-the-water examples.

  • A: Approach

The third step in REACT, A (Approach), informs your understanding of the rivers conditions. We’ll teach you how to distinguish between Approach A and Approach B, and how this understanding will influence your selecting the proper flies for the situation.

  • C: Choose

Choose…the step where we actually select the fly/flies. For this section of the class, we’ll explain how you should synthesize the preceding steps together so you can choose the right fly

  • T: Try

How do you know when to change flies if the fly you chose isn’t working? What does changing flies look like; do you size down the hook size or try an entirely different pattern? What if a trout refuses your fly?

For the final variable of REACT, T (Try), we’ll teach you the Rule of 20 and share useful guidelines for changing fly patterns.

  • Part 2 Sneak Peak

Interactive quizzes to test your knowledge and REACT Method Case Studies!

  • Q&A

Our responses to the live-attendees fly fishing questions.
